Advanced Nuances

Repetition & Irritation

Using "always" or "constantly" with Continuous forms expresses annoyance at a habit.

"He was always leaving his dirty dishes in the sink."

Politeness

Past Continuous makes requests or questions sound tentative and polite, essentially "softening" the question.

"I was wondering if you could help me."

Warning

Stative verbs (possession, emotion, thoughts) are rarely used in continuous forms.
